It’s one of the questions parents ask me most often, and the answer is almost always more reassuring than you might expect.
While there is an ideal window for traditional newborn photography, your baby does not suddenly become “too old” for beautiful photographs. Every baby develops differently, and I never expect your baby to fit into a strict timetable.
Some babies are wonderfully sleepy at three weeks, while others are wide awake at ten days. That’s why every newborn photography session at my Hatfield, Hertfordshire studio is completely baby led and tailored to your baby.
The Ideal Window for Newborn Photography: 5 to 14 Days
For traditional posed newborn photography, the ideal time is usually between five and fourteen days after birth.
During these early days, babies tend to be sleepier, naturally curled up and more comfortable being gently settled into those beautiful newborn poses. They are often happy to be swaddled in soft wraps and photographed in those tiny, tucked-up positions that remind you just how small they once were.
I keep everything soft, neutral and timeless, so your photographs never feel dated. Those delicate details, flaky newborn skin, tiny fingers, little ears and curled toes change so quickly, which is what makes these first few weeks so special.
This is why I always encourage parents to book their newborn photography session during pregnancy. I can reserve space around your due date, and once your baby arrives, we simply adjust your session date to suit.
What If My Baby Is Already Two to Four Weeks Old?
Please don’t panic. Two to four weeks is absolutely not too late for newborn photos.
Many babies are photographed during this period and the results can still be beautiful.
Your baby is still very much in those early newborn days. They may still sleep for long periods, remain relatively curled and have all those tiny details that make newborn photography so special.
Your session may take a little longer because your baby might need more time for settling, feeding and cuddles, but that is completely normal.
There is never any pressure to rush. We simply work around your baby and allow them the time they need.
If your baby is between two and four weeks old and you haven’t yet booked, get in touch as soon as you can. If I have availability, I’ll always do my best to fit you in.
Can You Photograph a Baby at Four to Six Weeks Old?
Absolutely.
By four to six weeks, things can start to change slightly. Babies are often more alert and wakeful, and settling into traditional sleepy poses can become a little less predictable.
Rather than trying to make your baby behave like a two-week-old, I adapt the session to where they are developmentally.
At this age, I’ll focus more on natural expressions, cuddles with mum and dad, beautiful eye contact and those little moments where your baby is starting to properly look around and engage with the world.
These sessions can capture something really special: the first glimpses of your baby’s personality.
Your gallery may look a little different from a session with a week-old baby, but that doesn’t make it any less beautiful.
If parents or siblings are joining you, you’re also welcome to use my carefully curated client wardrobe, making it simple to create timeless family portraits without worrying about what everyone should wear.
What If My Baby Is Older Than Six Weeks?
If your baby is over six weeks old, the traditional posed newborn photography window has generally passed.
At this stage, babies are becoming more alert and stronger, and they are less likely to tolerate the same sleepy, curled-up poses that create those distinctive early newborn images.
But that doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance to capture your baby.
It simply means we photograph them differently.
Between six and twelve weeks, babies are becoming increasingly alert, making eye contact and showing more of their individual personality. Those gorgeous little cheeks, expressions and interactions can make for incredibly beautiful photographs.
Then, from around four to five months, your baby may be ready for a milestone session, capturing their growing personality, smiles and those exciting new stages as they begin to sit with support.
If you’ve missed the newborn stage, my First Year Collective is a wonderful way to continue documenting everything that comes next, from those first smiles through to your baby’s first birthday and cake smash.
How to Get the Most From Your Newborn Photography Session
Whether your baby is ten days or several weeks old, there are a few simple things you can do to help make your session as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.
Choose a baby led photographer
Your baby doesn’t need to perform for the camera. I allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, settling and changing whenever your baby needs it.
Feed your baby before the session
A full tummy can help your baby settle more comfortably, although there is absolutely no need to worry if they need another feed once you arrive.
Dress in light layers
My Hatfield studio is kept warm and cosy for your baby, so lighter clothing is usually much more comfortable for you.
Allow plenty of time
Newborn photography is never rushed. Every baby is different, and I allow the session to move at your baby’s pace.
Bring someone with you if you can
Having your partner, a family member or someone you trust with you can help you relax and enjoy the experience rather than worrying about what your baby is doing.
Why Booking Your Newborn Photography During Pregnancy Is Best
It can feel strange to book your newborn photography session before your baby has even arrived, but it is the best way to make sure there is space available around your due date.
I only take a limited number of newborn bookings each month, so booking during pregnancy allows me to reserve a space for you.
You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will arrive.
I reserve your session around your estimated due date because babies very rarely arrive exactly when expected. Once your little one arrives, simply let me know and we’ll choose the most suitable date together.
I welcome families to my Hatfield studio from across Hertfordshire, including St Albans, Watford, Harpenden, Potters Bar, Barnet, Cuffley, Enfield and Welwyn Garden City.
A Note From Me
Having three children of my own, I know just how quickly those first few weeks disappear.
I remember how different my own babies looked from one week to the next. The days can blur together, you’re recovering, feeding, settling and getting to know this tiny new person, and before you know it, your brand-new baby has already changed.
That’s why newborn photography means so much to me.
It isn’t about creating a perfect photograph. It’s about preserving this tiny stage of your baby’s life before it changes again.
And if you’re reading this because you’re worried you’ve left it too late, please just get in touch.
I would always rather have an honest conversation with you and tell you what I think we can create than have you assume you’ve missed your opportunity and never ask.
Every session is baby led from start to finish. If your baby needs feeding, cuddles, changing or simply a little more time to settle, that’s exactly what we’ll do.
Your baby’s comfort and safety always come first.
Whether your baby is five days old, five weeks old or somewhere in between, there is still something beautiful we can create together.
