If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re expecting a little one, so first, congratulations! Those first few weeks after your baby arrives are like nothing else. Everything feels new, emotional, and a little blurry all at once. That’s exactly why I love newborn photography so much. It freezes those fleeting details – the tiny fingers, the soft eyelashes, the peaceful stretches – before they change all too quickly.

I often get asked what happens during a newborn photoshoot in Hatfield, how to prepare, and when the best time to book is. So here’s a little guide to help you feel completely relaxed and ready for your session.
When to Book Your Newborn Session
I always recommend booking your session after your 12- or 20-week scan. That way, I can schedule you for around 10 days after your due date. Once your baby arrives, we can adjust the date as needed.
Newborns are ideally photographed between 10 and 14 days old. During this stage, they’re usually very sleepy and still curl up naturally, which allows us to capture those soft, snuggly poses you see in my portfolio.
That said, don’t worry if your baby is a little older. Every baby is different, and I’ve photographed beautiful sessions at three and even four weeks old. The most important thing is that your baby and you feel comfortable.
What to Expect on the Day
When you arrive at my Hatfield photography studio, you’ll find a warm, peaceful space ready for you to settle in. There’s time to feed, cuddle, or simply breathe before we begin.
My sessions are always baby-led. That means we go entirely at your baby’s pace. No rushing, no pressure. Some babies sleep the whole way through; others need a few breaks for feeding and changing. It’s all completely normal.

I’ll gently guide your baby into comfortable poses, always keeping safety first. Most of the session is quiet and calm, with soft lighting and neutral tones that create timeless, beautiful images. Parents often tell me it feels more like a quiet morning together than a photoshoot, and that’s exactly what I hope for.
What to Bring
You don’t need to bring much at all. I provide everything for your studio newborn photography session, including soft wraps, delicate textures, and beautiful neutral baby outfits.

If you have something personal you’d like to include, maybe a family blanket or a small keepsake, we can absolutely work that in. For parents and siblings, I recommend simple, light-coloured clothing that keeps the focus on your baby.
Most families also bring a few essentials: extra nappies, milk, a dummy if you use one, and a spare outfit. But truly, there’s no need to stress about packing a lot. I’ve got most of what you’ll need right here at the studio.
Can Parents and Siblings Join the Session?
Absolutely. Family photos are such an important part of the story. We’ll take a mix of softly posed and natural images that show the love and connection between you. I often start with baby-only portraits, then invite parents and siblings to join toward the end of the session once everyone’s relaxed.

If you’re worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera, please don’t be. I’ll gently guide you through everything: where to stand, where to look, and when to just snuggle in close. The result is always natural and full of emotion.
Common Questions
How long does a newborn session last?
Usually around two to three hours. It gives us plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, and rest breaks.
What if my baby cries or won’t settle?
That’s completely fine – all babies do! We’ll pause, feed, or soothe as needed. I’ve photographed hundreds of little ones and have lots of patience (and tricks) for keeping them happy.
When will we see the photos?
You’ll come back to the studio for your viewing appointment about a week later. That’s when you can choose your favourite images and any artwork or albums you’d like to order.
