What Is Cake Smash Photography?

Cake smash photography is a type of first birthday photoshoot where your baby gets to explore, touch, and yes, smash a small decorated cake, all while a professional photographer captures every genuine reaction. It’s messy, it’s joyful, and the photos are absolutely brilliant. No two sessions are ever the same.

What Happens During a Cake Smash Photography Session?

I get asked this a lot, and I love explaining it because cake smash photoshoot is genuinely such a fun experience from start to finish.

Here’s how a typical session flows at my studio in Hatfield:

Setting Up the Scene

Before your little one arrives, I’ve already prepared the full set. I work with balloon colours, themed backdrops, and coordinated props to create a setup that looks beautiful and cohesive. You don’t need to bring anything. I handle all of it.

If you’ve chosen the optional cake add-on (more on that below), your beautifully decorated 5-inch cake will be ready and waiting too.

The First Portraits

We usually start with some clean, classic portraits before the cake comes out. These are some of my favourite shots…your baby looking bright and fresh, dressed in their little birthday outfit, before the chaos begins. These images balance the session beautifully.

The Smash Itself

Then comes the moment everyone’s waiting for. I place the cake in front of your baby and let them do whatever they want. Some babies dive straight in. Some give it a very suspicious poke first. Some just sit there looking at it like it’s a maths problem.

All of it is perfect. All of it gets captured.

I never rush this part. We go at your baby’s pace, which means the reactions you get are completely genuine. That’s what makes cake smash photos so special, there’s no performing, no direction. Just pure one-year-old curiosity.

The Splash Finish (Optional)

Some sessions include a little splash bath at the end, which babies absolutely love after getting covered in cake. It’s a lovely way to round off the session and gives you a completely different set of images to the smash itself.

I’ve photographed so many first birthday photoshoots at my studio over the years, and the reaction from parents is always the same: they didn’t expect to love the photos quite that much.

Mums, dads, siblings…everyone enjoys the session. It’s one of those occasions where you leave smiling, and that feeling comes through in every single photo.

What Age Is Best for a Cake Smash Session?

Cake smash sessions are designed specifically for babies turning one. That’s the sweet spot.

At around 12 months, most babies are sitting confidently and are curious enough to explore the cake properly. They’re also at an age where their little personalities really shine through. You get so much expression and reaction at this stage.

I’d recommend booking your first birthday photoshoot usually 4 weeks before the time of your baby’s actual birthday. Don’t worry too much about hitting the exact date. We just want your little one feeling well-rested and happy on the day.

How Long Does a Cake Smash Photoshoot Take?

Most cake smash sessions at my Hatfield studio run for around 1 to 1.5 hours.

That includes:

• Initial setup and settling time when you arrive
• The clean portrait section at the start
• The cake smash itself (which can take longer than you’d expect — we never rush it)
• The optional splash session at the end
• A quick clean-up and change for your little one

I never put a hard stop on sessions. If your baby needs a feed, a nap, or just a few minutes to warm up, we work around it. The whole point is that everyone stays relaxed, including you.

What Should Babies Wear for a Cake Smash Photoshoot?

This is one of the most common questions I get, and I love helping families with it.

For the clean portrait section, you want something sweet and special, such as a little birthday outfit, a tutu, a romper, or a cute dungaree set. Whatever feels celebratory and like your baby. Keep colours simple and soft if you can. Pastels and neutrals photograph beautifully and coordinate well with most set designs.

For the smash itself, many parents choose to change their baby into something simpler, such as a plain white vest, a nappy, or a lightweight bodysuit. This works really well because:

• The cleaner outfit stays perfect for the opening portraits
• The messier clothes don’t take attention away from your baby’s face
• Clean-up is much easier afterwards

For the splash section, a swim nappy is ideal.

Bring a change of clothes and a towel. I have everything else you need here at the studio.

Do Parents Need to Bring the Cake for Cake Smash Session?

You don’t have to. For an additional £25, I can arrange a beautifully decorated 5-inch cake that’ll be ready and waiting when you arrive. There are lots of designs to choose from, and I’ll coordinate the cake to match your balloon colours and theme so the whole setup looks cohesive.

If your baby has allergies or intolerances, please do let me know in advance. In that case, you’re welcome to bring a cake that’s been made specifically to suit their needs. I’ll make sure it fits in with the rest of the setup.
