Your Maternity Photoshoot Checklist | Pregnancy Photographer in Hertfordshire & Hatfield

If you’re planning a maternity photoshoot, you might be wondering what to bring and how to prepare. I’ve put together this maternity photoshoot checklist to guide you through everything, from what to wear to how to feel your best on the day.

At Megan Foster Photography, a maternity photographer in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, every session is a calm, guided experience from start to finish. Before your session, I will send you a detailed welcome guide, and professional hair and makeup is arranged for you on the day. You simply arrive and enjoy.

When to Book Your Maternity Photography Session

The best time for a maternity photography session is between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your bump is beautifully round and most mums are still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience fully.

I recommend booking during your second trimester to secure your preferred date. Sessions at my Hatfield studio are limited each month, and popular dates do fill up quickly, especially in spring and autumn.

Many of my clients begin their journey with a maternity session and continue through to newborn and baby milestone photography. Find out more about the First Year Baby Photography Collection in Hertfordshire to document every chapter from bump to birthday.

What to Wear: Clothing and Styling Tips

Embrace your beautiful bump! Keeping it simple and showcasing your belly is what it’s all about. Comfortable underwear is key to creating stunning pregnancy portraits. I have a selection of shirts, jumpers, and cardigans you can use during your shoot, which look fantastic paired with just a pair of pants.

Here is what tends to photograph beautifully for a maternity photography session:

  • Neutral tones: Cream, white, ivory, soft grey and warm beige are timeless and keep the focus on you.
  • Flowing fabrics: Soft jersey, chiffon or silk drape beautifully and flatter the bump.
  • Simple, fitted pieces: A fitted top or a wrap dress shows your shape without distraction.
  • Avoid busy prints, logos or bright colours: These can pull focus and date the images quickly.
  • Classic underwear in neutral tones: Simple, elegant and timeless for close-up bump portraits.

Before your session, I will send you a full style guide with personalised advice on coordinating outfits for you, your partner, and any children joining. You never need to figure this out alone.

Hair, Makeup and Feeling Your Best

Feeling confident on the day makes all the difference. That is why professional hair and makeup is arranged for every session at my Hatfield photography studio, included as part of the experience. You do not need to arrive camera-ready. You simply arrive, and we take care of the rest.

Think about the small things that help you feel like yourself: a favourite fragrance, freshly painted nails, a piece of jewellery that means something. These personal details often find their way into the images and make them feel entirely yours.

Bringing Your Partner and Children

Sharing these moments with your loved ones is priceless. I strongly encourage you to bring your partner and children to your photoshoot. These are memories you’ll cherish forever, so let’s make them together. Bring them along, and I’ll handle the rest.

For siblings, I recommend bringing them along after the first hour of the session. This gives us time to capture some beautiful intimate bump portraits before the energy of little ones fills the room. That said, if timing does not work out perfectly, do not worry. I work at your family’s pace, and some of the most beautiful images happen in the in-between
